5 HOT Coffee Alternatives!

Coffee can be great for some people; many studies have proven health benefits and we all know that nothing warms a rainy morning like a cup of delicious Portland coffee.

But, maybe you “need” coffee; maybe you have heart palpitations; maybe you’re having trouble sleeping at night; maybe you have anxiety. There are many reasons why people don’t (shouldn’t) drink coffee or caffeine but this does not make a person less inclined to enjoy aforementioned warm beverage.

Recently, I began the journey of a coffee hiatus. I realized I fit nicely into the mold of needing coffee and I didn’t like that feeling at all.

During my break, I have been experimenting with many alternatives and have made this list of my five favorites to share with you; Enjoy!

Teeccino Latte (Caffeine Free):

If you are in the throes of ditching the juice I suggest you start here.  Teeccino is a blend of carob, chicory, dandelion root, and other ingredients depending on the flavor you choose. All are organic and most are gluten free. Together they blend to create, in my opinion, the most coffee-like non-coffee beverage.

Directions:

  • Steep one tea bag in hot water.

  • After a few minutes of steeping pour the tea in a blender and add milk or milk-alternative of your choice and blend to mix and create a delicious frothy drink.

Anti-inflammatory Latte (Caffeine Free):

A great way to start the morning or cap off the afternoon is with this concoction. A blend of turmeric, ginger, lemon and honey. Turmeric has many proven health benefits and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory as does ginger. Some lemon in the morning helps kick start your digestion.

Directions:

  • Grate 2 tsp each fresh ginger and turmeric root (I like to put this directly in the mug but you can also put it in a steeping ball.) Alternatively, you can use 1 tsp ground of each.

  • Combine with juice of ¼ lemon and a drop of honey in your mug.

  • Add hot water and stir!

  • *Add a touch of black pepper and coconut oil to boost the turmeric’s anti-inflammatory powers.

Blue Lotus Chai Latte (Caffeine Free and Caffeinated Options):

This chai is quickly becoming my favorite drink in the morning. You can add the chai                 to hot water and drink like that or have it as a latte using the recipe below:

Directions:

  • In a blender combine equal parts hot water and milk of choice with one teaspoon of chai powder.

  • Add raw honey or maple syrup to your desired sweetness (or not at all)

Mushroom Elixers (Caffeine Free and Caffeinated Options):

There has been a lot of hype about mushrooms lately and I finally tried this tea for the first time and really enjoyed it. They have many types depending on your needs. Check out foursigmatic.com to learn more.

Chaga mushroom can help support immune functions.

Lion’s Mane is an all-natural cognitive enhancer. It has been shown
to support memory and concentration.

Cordyceps is an adaptogen to help produce and maintain energy.

Reishi is for stress and difficulty sleeping; this tea is great if you like a warm drink
in the evening!

Directions:

  • Pour contents of pouch and add hot water!

Matcha Latte (Caffeinated):

Would you believe that one serving of Matcha is equivalent to the health benefits of 10 servings of green tea? The difference between Matcha and green tea is that Matcha is the whole leaf ground up. Matcha contains antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals and provides a great way to kickstart your day!

Directions:

  • Add 1 scoop of Matcha and blend with heated milk or milk alternative of your choice.

  • Add honey or maple syrup to desired sweetness if you wish.
